Who Should Take This Course
History buffs and those who want a deep dive into the historical bases that lead to prevailing barriers. You will follow along the continuum from Cultural Precompetence to Cultural Proficiency to see how cultural assets can function both as core values and intercultural barriers for groups.
What You Will Learn
Using the Tools of Cultural Proficiency, participants examine historical foundations of systemic oppression that underlie schools’ unstated, negative core values that regard some cultures as deficits and learn Cultural Proficiency’s Guiding Principles as a means to developing intentional educator and school wide core values In which students’ cultures are embraced as assets.
NOTE: This course section is specifically for individuals seeking graduate units through Seattle Pacific University (SPU) or Brandman University (BU). There are graded assignments due in order to receive credit. Students seeking units must register directly with SPU or BU and pay required fees which are separate from the fee to take this course.
